Ponson Earns Another MLB Contract
Off the heels of his Dutch team’s shocking performance in the World Baseball Classic, Sidney Ponson has signed a minor league contract with the Kansas City Royals, the Associated Press has reported. After pitching for the Yankees and Rangers in 2008, Ponson became a free agent and joined the Nethelands baseball team for the WBC. He was great, as was the entire roster in defeating the mighty Dominican Republic not once, but TWICE in the opening round to send them packing. He was invited to big league camp and will compete for one of two open rotation spots. With Zack Greinke leading the way, the Royals are starting to actually show some pitching depth. Whether or not he earns a spot on Opening Day, you can safely bet that we’ll see Ponson in a major league uniform in 2009. While you’re here, check out this video from The Final Score of Ponson at a postgame press conference after one of their victories over the DR.
