Doc Rivers Fined $25,000 for Referee Remarks
Celtics head coach Doc Rivers has been fined $25,000 by the NBA for his remarks Tuesday night following a 127-121 loss against the Bulls in Boston, Fox Sports reported Thursday.
This was only a matter of time, as Rivers really chewed out referee Bill Kennedy when addressing the media following the loss. His claim is that he didn’t say anything to warrant the second technical foul that got him ejected late in the 4th quarter (it was a 3-point game at the time). He accused Kennedy of baiting him into drawing his own technical, calling it the most unprofessional personal foul he has ever received. While Rivers’ tirade may have been partially as a result of the frustrating loss, he is not known at all for using press conferences to blame anything on officiating. In other words, the referee really needs to piss Doc off to provoke a diatribe like Tuesday’s.
The diatribe in question can’t be found anywhere on video, but at the end of the below clip (courtesy of MouthpieceSports.com) he confidently calls on the NBA to review the tape and tell him why he got ejected. Apparently, they couldn’t find a reason; Kennedy was also fined an undisclosed amount. But what Rivers did warrants an automatic fine under NBA rules, any way you slice it. Fair game for everyone as far as I’m concerned.
