Daily Duel April 3: Georges Laraque vs. Joel Rechlicz
Islanders bruiser Joel “Don’t Call Me George Parros” Rechlicz has been on an absolute rampage since being added to their roster, compiling 44 penalty minutes in just 12 games. That includes six fighting majors, and he has tangled with the likes of Chris Neil, Tom Kostopoulos and John Erskine. In other words, this kid is not afraid to throw down. His latest challenge is perhaps the biggest one he could get, long-time elite fighter Georges Laraque. Now I know “elite fighter” is kind of an oxymoron, but in this decade it is Laraque who has been the gold standard for on-ice policework.
Laraque makes quick work of Rechlicz once he gets a hold of the sweater. One has to give credit to Rechlicz for stepping up, but staging a fight with Laraque isn’t always the best of ideas.
One can’t help but wonder how the agreement for the fight came to be. It’s questionable to think Laraque was as cordial as he was in this priceless clip of him fighting Raitis Ivanans. Hey, these fights may be staged, but at least they stage them like perfect gentlemen!
