Baseball Web Gems: April 6
Thanks to ESPN.com‘s now offering embedded video- and the magic of VodPod– I will be able to post the top plays from around the major leagues at any time! Opening day had its share of highlight-reel plays, five of which are noted here from the Baseball Tonight crew.
The most shocking of all these plays has to be Edwin Encarnacion of the Reds, who is known as mostly a defensive liability at third base. But he makes a great running play and good-enough throw to get the runner out.
Another strong effort is from Kazuo Matsui of the Astros, who makes an outstanding over-the-shoulder catch. These kinds of plays turn into bloop singles at least 90% of the time.
ESPN thought it was #2, but in my opinion the #1 play is from Matt Kemp of the Dodgers, an emerging five-tool star. He goes all-out to make the diving catch in center field, likely just the first of many great catches from Kemp in 2009.
