Baseball Tonight Web Gems for April 23
Matt Kemp leads off at No.5 with a great catch to provide extra help to Chad Billingsley, who is off to a tremendous start, as is Kemp. Speaking of great starts, Toronto’s Aaron Hill is killing the ball at the plate, but is also playing fine defense, as exemplified by his play up the middle featured at No.4.
Keeping it in the infield, Alexei Ramirez charges a ball from shortstop that looks like the second baseman could have gotten, but bare-hands it and makes a perfect throw anyway. Bill Hall’s diving stop at No.2 saved what was a no-hit bid at the time for Dave Bush.
Hall may have been No.1 if Bush’s no-hitter was realized, but it still would have been tough to supplant Rick Ankiel’s catch in center field at Busch Stadium. He channels Jim Edmonds as he runs a long way then dives backward to make the catch. Quite an amazing play and an amazing turn-around for Ankiel’s career. Hard to believe that guy was a major league pitcher nine years ago.
